Abstract Crude oil distillation unit (CDU) plays a central role in petroleum refining. It is very costly to build a new CDU , therefore, many retrofit projects into existing installations of CDUs have to be considered to increase production capacity and reduce energy consumption. Implementation of a pre-flash drum system to CDU in recent years has a good impact in raising the performance of the CDU especially when dealing with light crude oil. In this work, an existing CDU is retrofitted to raise the performance of the unit, especially when dealing with light crude oil. The retrofit is based on the implementation of a pre-flash drum and pump after the crude oil heat exchanger network and just before the furnace. In addition, the current work detects the optimum pre-flash drum pressure and the optimum entering tray of the pre-flashed vapor to the CDU. The choice of the optimum values is based on the minimum energy consumption of the condenser attached to the crude distillation tower and the maximum products obtained. HYSYS simulation program version 11 is used. The results showed a decrease in the energy consumption of the CDU by 9.8 % at the optimum pre-flash pressure and the optimum entering tray of the pre-flashed vapor. The presented study can be used as a guide in upgrading existing CDUs handling heavy crude oils and units under design case. |
