Abstract

Ismailia canal is a multi-purpose canal and considered the main source of water for the whole Eastern Nile Delta region. The environmental condition of the canal is not optimal. There are negative effects, as waterlogging, in the low lying areas located at the southern parts of the canal. The aim of the study is to investigate and assess the seepage from the canal and to delineate a buffer zone surrounding it and adjacent areas. Ismailia canal was divided to 8 reaches and seepage losses were calculated (analytical, empirical, numerical). MODFLOW was applied to simulate and calibrate (1992-2019) the prevailing condition of the study area. Proposed scenarios were performed to mitigate the waterlogging problem and predict the impact on the groundwater potential (2019-2024). Scenario 9 has the best solution with comparison to the rest of all scenarios and effective at km 70 to km 92. A buffer zone was delineated along Ismailia canal to constrain the adjacent activities. The chemical analysis was evaluated using the Water Quality Index method in order to assess the suitability of groundwater for drinking and irrigation purposes.
