Abstract

Epithelial odontogenic tumors comprise a complex group of lesions of diverse histo- pathologies and clinical behavior. They are classified into benign and malignant. However, some benign tumors have aggressive behavior and high recurrence rate. Differentiation between the aggressive benign odontogenic tumors and their malignant counterparts is controversial and difficult. Some investigations were carried out to study these lesions such as FCM and AgNOR staining. While FCM allowed DNA analysis in neoplasia by measuring: DNA content, DI and SPF, AgNORs number and/or size in a nucleus are correlated with the ribosomal gene activity and therefore with cellular proliferation. Accordingly, our study was designed to compare between aggressive benign and common malignant epithelial odontogenic tumors using FCM DNA analysis and AgNORs and to correlate the results of each technique with the histopathological grade of the examined lesions. Moreover, this study aimed to correlate the results of both techniques and to determine their sensitivity and specificity as diagnostic tests
