Abstract Dementia is a syndrome that is present in a wide range of neurological and systemic disorders , characterized by memory deficits and impairment of other cognitive functions sufficient to impair social and occupational activities It is known’to be the most common mental health problem in the aged population. from the large number of tests designed to assess the mental status, i remains the Mini-Mental state examination as the highly specific and reliable test,and this was the rational of using the M.M.S.E.in this study-In this study we used the DSMIV as one of the most recent classification system to diagnose the detected cases of dementia and according to its criteria, i tdementia was classified into Alzheimer’s disease, multi-infarct dementia and dementia due to general medical conditions as Huntington’s disease, Parkinson’s I disease , AIDS dementia. Pick’s disease, dementia due to recurrent head trauma, Creutzfeldt ” Jacob disease , vitamin B12 deficiency and other metabolic I disorders,s Alzheimer’s disease is characterized by memory impairment, in mild stage| of the disease , patients exhibits typically U-shaped curve i-e items from the s beginning and the end of the list are better recalled than items from the middle of the list. |
