Abstract

Sedimentation is a .phisical treatment process whereby
suspended particles of a nansity greater than that of the
liquid medium. are removed.
There is no upper limit to the amount of settleable.
solids that may present ...in~.water to be treate;d by sedimentation,
as experience has shown that water containing high
concentrations of suspended matter is more easily clarified
by sedimentation than that. with low concentrations, simply
because there exist greater opportunity for contact among
the greater number of particles, especially when the particles
ane..finely divided and not being in the colloidal from
(Imhoff and Fair; 1949; Babbitt, 1953; Fair and Gayer~ 1954,
and Babbitt and Donald, 1955).
Sedimentation ~ay be described simply in allow±ng
the suspended particles to settle by their own weight. The
po asa.bLl.Lcy of such settlement aseume s that tihese particles
are of higher spec.Lf’Lcgr~vity than that of liquid contain-

quantity :l,.sof less specific gravity than liquid, this rises
to the su+face, and can, therefore also be separated from
the liquid. Som~ suspended matter is of precisely the same
specific gravity as liquid, in which case it will incline
neither to siJ::tknor to rise. The colloidal state may be
regarded as an intermediate state be-yween suspension ’and
solution.
