Abstract

I Cleft palate is a common congenital anomaly which has its effects throughout tthe child’s life if not managed properly, successfully and early in his life.
Cleft palate management is complex. There is no current agreement on the appropriate treatment strategy. Extensive disagreement on the pathophysiology, timing of intervention, and techniques of surgical repair, however, several main points should be emphasized. Normal speech should be the most important consideration in the therapeutic plan, and growth disturbance should be minimized, but not at the expense of speech impairment.
In the present study, simple closure palatoplasty (Von Langenbeck technique) and double opposing Z-plasty palatoplasty (Furlo-w technique) were applied as two different surgical techniques to correct a material of 24 cases had cleft palate deformity who were suffering from speech disorders due to velopharyngeal insufficiency.
The cases of the study were collected from the outpatient clinic ofENT and plastic surgery in Menoufia University Hospital during the period between April 2004 to October 2006. All patients were assessed pre- and post-operatively by perceptual speech analysis, flexible fiberoptic naso-pharyngoscopy to’ assess velopharyngeal gap size and palatal and lateral pharyngeal wall movement, and nasometry to measure nasalance score. As well as the photographic documentation pre- and post-operatively.
This thesis included 24 patients; the male : female ratio was 11:13, the median age at the time of surgery was 6.5 years (range, 3 to 13 years); the average follow-up duration was 17.9 months (range, 12 to 25
