Abstract

Lead toxicity is considered a major health problem spescially for children. Recently the toxic level of lead is lowerd to 10 ug/dl. The present study is a preliminary study for screening lead in blood (both of mothers and children), urine, milk and water supply of infants and children in the first two years of life. These children were attending Assiut university Hospital either with various health problems or were attending the well baby clinic for vaccination.
Significantly higher lead levels were reported, in our study, as regarding older age group, positive history of pica, clinically mainfested rickets, protein energy malnutrition and iron deficiency anemia than the rest of cases. The urinary lead level can be used as an indicator for lead exposure as we repoted significant positive correlation between child serum lead level and the level in urine.
