Abstract Leptin was discovered in 1994. It is a 16 kDa peptide hormone. It s formed of 167 amino acid. It is encoded by the obese (ob) gene Numerous pieces of evidence have accumulated showing that leptin potentially plays an important role in the control of the reproductive function. However, its role in the control of reproductive physiology is little understood The leptin concentrations during assisted reproduction have been a subject of current investigations. It has been suggested that leptin may have an advantageous effect not only on oocyte and zygote development in the early stages, but also on the process of implantation and therefore its evaluation may be useful for the clinical determination of embryo quality in IVF-ET program. |
