Abstract

The management of tetralogy of Fallot has evolved over the last few decades, and good results after primary or two-stage repair have been reported.
However controversy persists concerning the optimum management strategy for patients presenting with tetralogy of Fallot. Opinions range the spectrum from those who advocate neonatal complete correction in all patients irrespective of symptoms to those preferring to defer total correction until later in life, using palliative shunting if necessary.
The purpose of the present study was to analyze the result of our current surgical management by assessing the perioperative and short term follow up in the group of primary repair versus the group of two-stage repair in order to define the optimal strategy and timing of operation.
This study was conducted on one hundred patients with tetralogy of Fallot divided into two groups: group (A) was the group of patients (60 patients) who underwent primary repair with mean age was 3 years and mean weight was 13.5 kg and group (B) was the group of patients (40 patients) who had had a two-stage repair with mean age was 4.25 years and mean weight was 16.5 kg; at department of cardiothoracic surgery, Ain Shams University hospitals and pediatric cardiosurgery center, ElTalaba insurance hospital, between November 2005 and December 2007.
