Abstract

The present research work deals with an investigation of the static behaviour of industrial steel frames, which are commonly used in Egypt, and a study of the various design methods used in the structural modeling and analysis of this type of structures. The study outlines the basic principles of linear and nonlinear static analysis of these steel frames. The study explains a large number of simplified finite element models used commonly by the design engineer in Egypt, in addition to a number of more sophisticated models which use a larger number of elements and consequently produces more accurate results. A number of different parameters affecting the behaviour of steel frames was taken into consideration, including the gradual change in the section of tapered columns and beam haunches, in addition to the relative stiffnesses of the various structural elements, the crane loads, and crane height. The study comprised several loading cases including vertical and horizontal loads on the steel frames, and included also a study of the buckling loads of these steel columns. The results obtained using the different models were summarized and a comparative study between these models was presented with respect to their ease of use, and the accuracy of their results. This study was utilized to develop a number of recommendations regarding the advantages of using each of the proposed models, and the feasibility of use of the more simplified models by the design engineer while keeping adequate accuracy for the obtained results
