Abstract

This study is carried on 164 weaning-(35 day old) female bouschat giant rabbits. Factors affecting their mammary gland growth are investigated. The study also aims to investigate: 1) the effect of dietary crude fiber (cf) level on growth rate, development of caecum and stomach. 2) effect of thYroxine and cortisone injections upon mammary gland weight and histology, pituitary growth and weight. 3) relation between litter size mammary gland weight and histology. Results obtained proved that 15% cf in the diet causes e highest average weekly body Weight gain while 20% cf causes losses in body weight. Cortisone injection causes higher mammary gland weight during pregnancy and lactation than thyroxine. Cortisone and thyroxine cause higher pituitary weight than thyroxine control and better body weight individual birth weight decreases as number of new borns increases and total litter weight at parturition increases progressively with number of youngs.
