Abstract
The growth of knowledge regarding the etiology and the pathogenesis of diabetes has led many individuals and groups in the diabetes community to express the need for a revision of the nomenclature, diagnostic criteria, and classification of diabetes mellitus .As a consequence, WHO in 1996 convened a consultation on this subject in London in United Kingdom at December 1996, ADA also issued in 1997 a new recommendations for the same subject. In general, both the ADA and WHOt-groups reached a similar conclusions regarding the definition, description, classification, diagnostic criteria, and testing of diabetes mellitus.
