Abstract

A follow- up study was conducted over a period of 3 months from the 1 st of December 2004 to the beginning of March 2005 on patients admitted to the Urology and Orthopedic departments of Menoufiya University hospitals. In that research, the incidence rates of nosocomial infection in the Urology and Orthopedic departments were calculated, studied and compared to the incidence rates obtained from other regions all over the world. Bacteriological swabs were taken from the infected patients; the hospital environment and the medical staff working in the previously mentioned departments to determine the causative organisms. Moreover, the KAP of the medical staff about nosocomial infection and infection control measures were also studied. In addition, the epidemiological characteristics of the patients under study and the possible risk factors that might predispose to nosocomial infection had been emphasized upon. Data were collected via a pre- designed questionnaire that includes personal & socioeconomic data, data about admission, clinical condition of the patient, instrument use, antibiotic administratio-n and - the associated medical conditions (if present). Swabs were taken from the infected patients, inoculated on different media and incubated aerobically and anaerobically. Any growth was identified by microscopic examination and biochemical reactions and then subjected to antibiotic sensitivity test.
