Abstract

Chest tubes are used to manage various thoracic conditions by safely removing air or liquid from the pleural cavity and enabling the lung to expand; chest tube can be life saving procedure. Awareness of the complications and mechanical difficulties that can occur with chest tube and their drainage system is essential for safe and effective use of the this device. The aim of this study was to identify problems of patients with chest tube. One research question was formulated; which is ,what are the patients problems of chest tube . a sample of convenience of sixty patients was selected from four wards, at al-kisser al-aini (Elmanial university hospital). Data was collected utilizing a designed assessment data sheet that consists of three main sections (a) demographic data, (b) medial background data, and (c) check list for documenting problems related to chest tube with evidences of its presence. Physical examination through direct observation of tube insertion site and drainage system and structured interview were utilized for data collection. Ineffective breathing pattern, ineffective airway clearance, bleeding, tube, obstruction ,tube air leak, tube dislodgement, tube infection, pain, anxiety knowledge deficit were the commonest identified patients problem with chest tubes among the studies sample. However pain and knowledge deficit ranked the highest. Moreover, ineffective breathing pattern and bleeding ranked the lowest. Significant relationship was detected between the incidence of some chest tube problems and patients data such as; diagnoses, durations of the tube placed in site, chest physiotherapy, smoking habit, way of sterilization of drainage system, and comorrbidites especially diabetes mellitus. Significant relationship was also existed between pain and ineffective airway clearance, and anxiety as well as between anxiety and knowledge deficit. Replication of this study was
