المستخلص

Ghrelin is a polypeptide hormone discovered in 1999, its main source is the stomach beside other tissues which share in its production.
Ghrelin functions to stimulate growth hormone secretion, increase appetite and sense of hunger with its other effects on other body systems.
As the stomach is the main source of ghrelin, our study aimed at detecting the plasma level of active ghrelin in patients with different gastric diseases.
Our study included 50 patients classified into 4 groups “group I” included 10 patients suffering from chronic gastritis, group II included 15 patients suffering from gastric ulcer, group III included 15 patients suffering from acute gastritis, and group IV included 10 healthy subjects as a control group.
The diagnosis of patients was done depending on clinical finding and upper gastrointestinal endoscopy..
All subjects were submitted to CBC, LFTs, KFTs, weight, height, BMI, waist circumference, hip circumference. W/H ratio, upper GI endoscopy and plasma level of active ghrelin.
The results of our study showed:
1- There is a significant statistical difference regarding plasma level of active ghrelin among the studied groups being lowest in the chronic gastritis group, followed by the gastric ulcer group, and highest among the acute gastritis group, compared to the control group.
2- There is no correlation between serum ghrelin level and age, body mass index, waist circumference, hip circumference, or W/H ratio.
