Abstract

ubstance use disorder used to be problems of males. However, now it is considered as a serious problem in females due to the social changes that took place and this led her to become more exposed to alcohol and drugs, including illicit drugs. Women are prescribed mood-altering drugs, including tranquillizers and painkillers, more often than men and are at higher risk of experiencing problems with prescription medication (Zilberman et al., 2002). These patterns resonate with women seeking treatment for symptoms of depression, anxiety, pain or insomnia from health care providers (Walde et al., 2002).
Women often described their substance use as having sudden heavy onset often following a traumatic event as in numbing emotional pain from issues such as sexual abuse, work problems, grief over the death of loved ones, or guilt over injury of loved ones ,especially children (Pool & Isaac, 2001 and Peterson et al., 2002).
