Abstract

SUMMARY :Since the 1980s, injection of botulinum toxin has proven to be safe and effective therapy for a variety of somatic and autonomic motor disorders.
Urologist are now finding clinical success with urethral and bladder BTX-A injections in the treatment of D.S.D., non neurogenic pelvic floor spasticity, refractory over active bladder and others such as prostatitis or BPH.
As the effects of BTX-A are transient, repeated doses are needed for effective control of bladder pain and urgency and the dose with the longest duration and lowest risk of urinary retention need to be identified.
Many interesting research questions remain regarding BTX-A effect on the neural pathways of the lower urinary tract. However, one can’t deny the ingenuity of man in transforming the lethal toxin of clostridium botulinum into a modern day therapeutic medicine.
