Abstract To evaluate the reliability of echo—Doppler ana— lysis, as well as exercise Doppler studies in preoperative assessment of mitral stenosis, 45 patients (33 women and 12 men), ranging in age from 22 to 75 years (mean 57.2 years) were prospectively studied. Thirty-five patients (78%) had pure mitral stenosis, while 10 patients (22%) had mitral stenosis and mitral regurgitation. Seventeen patients had previous mitral commissurotomy by the closed technique in 13 and by the open method in 4 Ten normal individuals, matched for age and sex as much as possible, were included in the study as controls. All patients were subjected to full clinical exam— lnation, as well as 12-lead electrocardiogram, chest and heart roentgenography, M-mode and 2-D, as well as Doppler echocardiography. M-mode echocardiography was performed to obtain chamber dimensions (left atrium, right ventricle and left ventricle) , mitral leaflet thickness (fibrosis or calcification), and left ventricular systolic function, using the fractional shortening equation TwQz-dimensional echocardiography was done for measurements of mitral valve area by planimetry, assess— ment of thickness and pliability of valve leaflets and |
