Abstract t h e s i s conprises f cur chapters: In the first chapter a general roview is given on the l i t e r a t u r e of the chelating properties of cc -nitroso-13 - naphthol and r e l a t e d comgounds. Pron t h i s survey, it was concluded thab no work has been c a r r i e d out on Pd(I1) and Ni(i1) chelates with nitroso-h-sa1.t. Also, the work on Co(I1) is very liinited and merits reiavestigation. In cha2bez TI, the experhental details f o r the preparation of solutions and of the metal complexes are given . The technique the d i f f e r e n t ap2aratus used i n the present study ae also described. In cQadte,.r III, the uv. and vl;-sible absorption spectra of .K-nitroso-P-naphthol and nitroso-R-salt i n solutions of varying pH and organic solvents of d i f f e r e n t p o l a r i t i e s are recorded and disccrssed. The uv--bauds are assigned to Y - transit-ions within the arornabic sys tern while the v i s i b l e bands am assigned to intramolecular charge t r a n s f e r. Also the e f f e c t cf metal ion on absorption spectra of nitroso-k-sal% are given. The d i s s o c i a t i o n constants of the compounds were calculated f r o m the s p e c t r a l changes with the .HH+i o n conc ent r a t ion ap~lyinga new procedure which. |
