Abstract

Malignant tumors of the larynx account for approximately 2-5% of all malignancies diagnosed annually. Cancer in adjacent areas of the hypopharynx (pyriform sinus and post cricoid region) are less common Males continue to predominate, though females are catching up because of their increase in exposure to tobacco. The majority of lesions occur in the fifth and sixth decades of life. The present study included 40 patients with different laryngeal and hypopharyngeal malignancies. They have been treated by using Co60 machine during the period from June 1988 to May 1991 at the radiation therapy Unit of Tanta University.Every patient was evaluated by complete clinical and radiological examination. Location and size of the primary tumor were determined by endoscopic examination together with biopsy for determination of the definite diagnosis of the lesion, the type of the tumor and its degree of differentiation. All patients were randomized and categorized into two groups according to the selection of the treatment modality which was based on tumor type and stage, patient’s age and preference. Irradiation was applied for 29 patients as the line of treatment, whereas combined therapy was applied to the 11 patients left. In radiotherapy modality, the tumor dose was 60 to 70 Gy in 30 to 35 fractions of 2 Gy each over 6 to 7 weeks. In combined modality, the tumor dose was 40 to 45 Gy in 20 to 22 fraction of 2 Gy each.
