Abstract

he present i n v e s t i g a t i o n was carried-out to i d e n t i f y the major f~mgic alming s t a l k and ear - rot on maize p l a n t , study the pathogenicity the isolated fungi, to study the e f f e c t of three systemic ftmgicides on the incidence of the disease, and to determine some of the physiological properties of the isolated fungi. (1) The most common fungi isolated from infected s t a l k s , were Cephalosporium maydis Samra, Sabet and Hingoranl, C. acremonium Corda, and Sclerot iu-m bataticola Taub. ( = klacrophomina phaseoli (’ laub,) Ashby.) , whereas hsarium monilifome Sheldon (11) and F-. oxysporum Schlecht . Pr. were conmonly isolated from roots, crown and kernels, F_. moniliforme (I) was isolated from s t a l k s , grains, roots, and crown of the affected seedlings . ( 2 ) The percentage of germination and root development were strongly affected by the above mentioned fungi. ( 3 ) Under greenhouse condi t ions , whereas C. maydis and -C. acremonium showed to cause symptoms f i r s t l y at flowering time(about 2 months a f t e r p l a n t i n g ) , the other isolated fungi caused seedling blight and wilt.
