Abstract

This study was carried out at Sakha Agric. Res. Station through 1989/90 and 1990/91 seasons to study the effect of gypsum and sewage sludge applications with different levels of irrigation water on the improvement of some physical and chemical properties as well as productivity of saline sodic soils in the northern part of Nile Delta. Also, to study the improvement of water use efficiency and decrease water loss during leaching processes through using better water management practices to reach a permissible level of soil salinity by minimum amount of irrigation water and using suitable crop patterns. An experiment area (1.82 fad) was seiected to represent a typical deteriorated saline sodic clayey soils. Split-split plot design with three replicates was used in this study. The irrigation was carried out in two treatments for main plots when 25 % of available soil moisture was depleted. Raising the moisture content up to field capacity plus 15% of added water as leaching requirements in the first treatment (I,) and field capacity plus 30% of added water as leaching requirements in the second treatment (I,). Gypsum was added to the subplots in Go (without gypsum) and GR (gypsum requirements). Sewage sludge was added to the sub-sub plots in three levels (0, 10 and 20 tonslfad). Amounts of sewage sludge and gypsum requirements were added for one time and mixed with the surface layer before the first crop (berseem).
