Abstract

A series of Schiff base ligands derived from aliphatic or aromatic diamines and o-hydroxy, o-methoxy aromatic aldehydes and 2-OH naphthaldehyed and their complexes with MO~’, ~e~A+P+,, 1n3+, cu2+, ~i~+anznd2 + investigated as inhibitors on the corrosion inhibition of mild steel (SS 400 ). Corrosion inhibition behaviour of mild steel (SS 400) is studied in various aqueous solution such as cooling water system. The variation of corrosion rate with various concentration is measured at room temperature. The corrosion rate decreased with increasing concentration and increasing the number of methylene group of inhibitors. The inhibition efficiency of mild steel was calculated as follows: The maximum inhibition efficiency value of mild steel increased in the order Salen < Salon < Saldn. In low concentrated tap water (LC solution) the anodic current density of (SS 400) is smaller than that in the case of blank solution and the potential shifts to the positive direction. r 4 In hydrochloric acid solution, the corrosion rate decreased with increasing concentration and increasing the number of methylene group of inhibitors and adsorption of Schiff base compounds on the mild steel (SS 400) was found to be governed by Langmuir adsorption isotherm. The cathodic current densities in the solution containing inhibitor are much smaller than thc blank solution. The rest potential of mild steel (SS 400) in the solution containing inhibitors remained constant.
