Abstract This study included 251 patients with whom were admitted and managed in Mansoura surgery department, chest and University br oncb t ec t as t s, Cardiothoracic hospital -from Jaun:uary t 984 to Jaunuary 1994. 42 cases wet-e treated conservatively and 209 cases were treated surgically. We conclud that :- 1- The bronchjectasis is a chronic in-flammatory disease o-f the lungs characterised by bronchial dilatation which is usually permenant. 2- The development o-f bronchiectasis is a multi-factorial phenomenon. Acquired in-fection o-f the lung is almost the major contributor specially pulmonary tuberculosis which was the m~in aetiology in our study. Congenital -factors like intr~ lobar sequestration may also playa role. 3- Bronchial o~struction by slowly growing tumours, adenomas, granulomas or inhaled -foriegn bodies, and post traumatic bronchial stenosis is an another cause o-f bronchiectasis. 4- The a-f-fected part shows irregular dilated bronchi -filled with mucous or mucopus with destruction o-f the normal elements that are replaced by -fibrosis. |
