Abstract The present thesis deals with the geology of the calcretes commonly developed on the pleistocene limestone ridges in Burg El Arab area. Calcrete types and profiles have been examined in the field. The petrography and mineral composition of the calcretes have been determined. The following represents the most important conclusions of the present work. Calcrete types and profiles: (1) The Calcrete are associated with weathering or unconformity surfaces which truncate the underlying pleistocene limstone bed rock. (2) The thickness of the Calcretes commonly increases on gently sloping and nearly horizontal areas. The older Calcretes are relatively thick. |
