Abstract
The problem : The differences and similarities between English and Arabic in using request and apology strategies. Objectives of the study : This work aims at clarifying the importance of studying Politeness theory. It also aims to find out the differences and similarities between English and Arabic in using request and apology strategies. Division of the study : This research consists of 5 chapters. The first chapter includes the introduction and the review of literature. The second chapter includes the objectives and methodology. The third chapter includes the pragmatic analysis of the request strategies(the statistical data obtained by the students). Chapter 4 includes the pragmatic analysis of the apology strategies(the statistical data obtained by the students). Finally, Chapter 5 includes the findings and conclusion of this research. Results of the study : The subjects of the study consist of 2 groups. The first one consists of 44 British native speakers of English enrolled at the university of Wales, Aberystwth. The second group consists of 83 fourth year students enrolled at the department of English ,Faculty of Arts, Mansoura University. This research finds out that learning the social norms of other cultures is a matter of top importance if polite communication among the followers of the different cultures of the world is to be achieved.
