Abstract In the present investigation, new series of imidazo[4,5-f]quinoline-8-carboxylic acids and benzimidazole derivatives were prepared. The structures of these compounds were confirmed by elemental microanalysis, 1H NMR, 13C NMR, IR and mass spectroscopy. Twenty one of the newly synthesized compounds were subjected to antimicrobial susceptibility testing against Gram-negative bacteria; Escherichia coli (ATCC 8739), Gram-positive bacteria; Bacillus subtilis (ATCC 31784) and Staphylococcus aureus (ATCC 6538), and pathogenic fungi; Candida albicans (ATCC 10231) using agar disk diffusion test. Thirteen of these compounds were subjected to broth microdilution test to determine their minimum inhibitory concentration. The results showed most of the tested compounds exhibited potent antimicrobial activity. |
