Abstract Background: Hypertension in children is currently recognized as an important health issue Objects: provide the necessary background information, diagnostic strategies especially ambulatory blood pressure and treatment recommendations required for children with hypertension. Methods and results: Hypertension can be classified as primary and secondary. Most of childhood hypertension is secondary. Mercury sphygmomanometer is the gold standard for measurement of BP in a child. ABPM is very useful in the evaluation of hypertension in special conditions. Effective treatment of hypertensive children requires a comprehensive approach incorporating non-pharmacologic measures and pharmacologic treatment. Conclusion: Hypertension in children is increasing in incidence. Most children have secondary hypertension. When discovered, elevated BP should be appropriately investigated with the evaluation tailored to the age of the child and the severity of the BP elevation. The workup is simple and inexpensive. Treatment should begin with non pharmacologic measures. |
