Abstract Erythropoietin (EPO) is a glycoprotein hormone secreted mainly from the! ’,’ kidney and to a lesser extent from the liver. Serum EPO level was measured in 30 I cirrhotic and 30 hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) patients to assess its role in the I pathogenesis of anemia of Ii vcr disease. It has been found that, serum EPO level I increased significantly in both cirrhotic and HCC patients as compared 10 control. I : This increase was not related to iron deficiency or lowered hematocrit (HCT) value i ” and other factors may contribute. EPO has no role in the pathogenesis of anemia in I our patients and so recombinant human EPO is not recommended as a \a:ullbk~ treatment for anemia in patients with liver disease. |
