Abstract

1- The present study evaluated the environmental Hazards along the Nile Delta Coastal area between Damietta and Port Said – Egypt. The biodiversity of zooplankton and physico-chemical analysis of water samples were carried out during the period of winter 2003 to summer 2004. 2- The geomorphological features of the studied area were investigated and the mineralogical analysis of sixty two samples at different sites were carried out. The relatively coarser sediments were encountered in the eroded areas. Currents transported the relatively finer sediments and deposited them in low energy areas. Behind the constructed detached breakwaters, the waves sweeped sand and deposited forming a slowly growing tombolos that grown from the shore toward the breakwaters. Generally, the accreted beach characterized by relatively finer and well-sorted sand than that of the eroded beach. Water currents lead to selective sorting of sediments, and accordingly minerals, coarser sediments and heavy minerals of relatively higher density were observed at the sites of erosion (sector I), while finer sediments with their abundance of relatively lighter heavies were observed at the sites of accretion (sector II and III). 3- Concerning the water analysis, the physico-chemical characteristics were carried out including the following parameters: pH values, turbidity, total dissolved solids, ammonia, nitrates, sulfates, orthophosphates and total phosphorus. 4- The present study illustrated the significant differences in the biodiversity of zooplankton in the studied area. Sixteen zooplankton species were identified. On the other hand, the biodiversity of benthic invertebrates at studied area was greatly varied. The species were distributed on the sediment of shoreline of beach at the selected Sites.
