Abstract The growing uses of nuclear radiation energy generated by electric power such as X-ray machines, linear accelerator, betatrons and electric power generated by nuclear power…….etc, all involved exposure to high electric and magnetic fields mixed with ionizing radiation. Therefore, it was necessary to study the biological effects of electric fields, fast neutrons and mixed radiation exposures from electric field and fast neutrons. The philosophy of the aim of the present study was to evaluate the radiation risk associating with exposure of male Albino rats, the animals chosen for the present study, to 50-Hz, 6 kV/m electric field, 1 mSv fast neutron dose and mixed radiation from fast neutrons and electric field distributed over a period of 3 weeks at a rate of 5 day/week, 8 hours/day. Blood samples were collected from the animals of different groups to study the following investigation that were carried out (A) Studies on the rbcs membrane: (1) Osmolarity and fragility of the red blood cells (rbcs), (2) Solubilization by nonionic detergent, (3) Histological examination of the membrane, (B)Studies on hemoglobin molecular structure: (1) Dielectric measurements for hemoglobin molecule, (2) The absorption spectra of hemoglobin was measured for all samples. (C)Biochemical investigations for blood serum in which the SGPT, SGOT and glucose level were investigated. Exposure to weather single or mixed radiation fields has hazardous effects based on the new biophysical concepts and methods of investigation and revision of the of the dose limits is necessary. These considerations should be suggested by both public and scientific organizations to minimize the risk from exposure to both ionizing and non-ionizing radiation fields especially for workers areas where both fields are generated. |
