Abstract

The aim of this work is review of literature to define the significance of different coronary risk factors; hypertension, DM, dyslipidemia, smoking, age & sex, not only on the incidence of coronary artery disease but also on the extent, distribution & morphology of coronary artery disease on coronary angiography. This review concluded the following items. Diabetics have more left main coronary artery disease with more diffuse and distal lesions.
Although, hypertension is a risk factor for presence of three-vessel disease, distribution, severity and extension of coronary stenosis are similar to those of normotensive patients. For the non diabetic patients, global atheroma burden is independently related to age, a history of hypertension, and concentration of low-density lipoprotein. History of smoking is also predictive of severe coronary atherosclerosis among nondiabetic patients. Distinct morphological characteristics associated with coronary artery disease show different degrees of heritability. Although male gender is considered a risk factor for coronary artery disease, once the patients were found to have significant coronary artery disease on angiography, gender differences in the severity of coronary lesions were found in neither number nor distribution of the disease.
