Abstract

1- The present study evaluated the environmental impacts of the construction of detached breakwaters at Ras El-Bar coast at Damietta Governorate and on the biodiversity of zooplankton and physico-chemical analysis water in addition to the coastal collection of biota during the period of summer 2003 to winter 2004. 2- The geomorphological features of the studied area were investigated and the mineralogical analysis of seventy seven samples at different depths were carried out. The relatively coarser sediments were encountered in the eroded areas (between the constructed detached breakwaters). Currents transported the relatively finer sediments and deposited them in low energy areas (in the shadow of the detached breakwater). Behind the constructed detached breakwaters, the waves sweeped sand and deposited it at the zone of convergence, forming a slowly growing tombolo that grown from the shore toward the breakwaters. Generally, the accreted convex beach characterized by relatively finer and well-sorted sand than that of the eroded concave beach. Water currents lead to selective sorting of sediments, and accordingly minerals, coarser sediments and heavy minerals of relatively higher density were deposited along the areas between the constructed detached breakwaters, while finer sediments with their abundance of relatively lighter heavies were deposited just behind the detached breakwaters. 3- Concerning the water analysis, the physico-chemical characteristics were carried out including the following parameters: pH values, turbidity, total dissolved solids, ammonia, nitrates, sulfates, orthophosphates and total phosphorus. 4- The present study illustrated the significant differences in the biodiversity of zooplankton in the studied area. Sixteen zooplankton species were identified. On the other hand, the biodiversity of benthic invertebrates at studied area was greatly varied. The species were distributed on the sediment of shoreline of beach at the selected Sites. Algae species were restricted only in some green and blue green algae and very few species of golden algae. These algae were belonged to Chlorophyta, Cyanophyta and Chrysophyta phyla.
