Abstract Experiments had been carried out in the Insectary and in the Experimental field of Economic Entomology Department Faculty of Agriculture, Mansoura University and Plant Protection Institute during the period from 2002 till 2004 to study the following. The following points could be concluded from this investigation: 1 Exochomus nigromaculatus was one of the most efficient coccinellid predator attacking aphid species and scale insects. However a little previous information were found in the literature concerning its efficiency on aphid species in Egypt. 2 Cowpea aphid A. craccivora was the best natural prey for rearing the coccinellid predator E. nigromaculatus. 3 Cowpea aphid A. craccivora was the best natural prey for rearing the coccinellid predator H. tridecimpunctata. 4 Five artificial diets were prepared and tested in rearing five coccinellid predatory insects namely. E. nigromaculatus, Cy. vicina isis, H. tridecimpunctata, C. undecimpunctata and C. septempunctata. There were significant differences between the effect of diets on the biological aspects of these predators. 5 The best control of cowpea aphid populations was achieved using the lower predator: prey ratios 1:5 and 1:10 after five days from adults release. 6 C. undecimpunctata was more effective than H. tridecimpunctata in controlling cowpea aphid under cages conditions, and the two coccinellid predatory species can be used as biological control agents against A. craccivora in cowpea plantation under field conditions at the predator prey ratios of 1 : 5 and 1 : 10. |
