Abstract

The aim of this study is to estimate weather sICAM-1 is a marker of endothelial dysfunction in type 2 diabetes or not. It aims also to investigate the relationship between sICAM-1 and various components of type 2 diabetic syndrome involving hyperglycemia and dyslipidemia. This study was conducted on 51 men with a mean age of 45 years. 15 were healthy volunteers; the other 36 were early diagnosed patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus. In this study there was significant increase of serum sICAM-1 concenteration in the diabetic patients when compared with control subjects. A high significant positive correlation between sICAM-1 and HbA1c has been also estimated in all diabetic groups. HbA1c is thought to be a trigger of increased sICAM-1. this is because of estimation of decreased sICAM-1 following glycemic control. In this study, there was, also, significant positive correlation between sICAM-1 and triglyceride in all diabetic groups. HDL-C was found to be negatively and significantly correlated with sICAM-1.
