Abstract Methyl methacrylate (MMA), acrylonitrile (AN), and ethyl acrylate (EA) were graft copolymerized onto wool fibers by using Fenton<U+2019>s reagent, potassium permanganate / oxalic acid, and Mohr<U+2019>s salt / potassium persulphate as a combined redox initiator systems respectively in a limited aqueous medium under visible light irradiation in heterogeneous media. The effect of monomer, initiator, substrate, and time of irradiation on the rate of grafting reaction were studied. The rate of grafting was found to be highly rapid in presence of light than in its absence. Grafting parameters such as grafting percentage (GP), grafting efficiency (GE%), and homopolymer percentage (Homo%) under different conditions were studied. Also the resistance toward acids and bases, water absorption, and dyeability were studied as a function of (GP). The grafted wool products were characterized using IR spectroscopy and differential thermal analysis (DTA) and thermo gravimetric analysis (TGA). |
