Abstract

Background/Aim: Diabetic retinopathy is the most common microvascular ‎complication of diabetes. This work aimed to evaluate erythrocyte SOD, GPx levels and ‎serum vit E in diabetic patients with or without retinopathy.‎ Subjects: The study was conducted on 15 diabetic patients without retinopathy and 34 ‎patients with clinical evidence of retinopathy either proliferative or non proliferative. ‎They were subjected to investigations in form of fasting blood glucose, lipid profile, ‎serum creatinine, erythrocyte superoxide dismutase, glutathione peroxidase levels and ‎serum vit E level.‎ Results: There were significant increase in fasting blood glucose, cholesterol, ‎triglycerides, LDL and significant decrease in HDL values in diabetic group without ‎retinopathy or diabetic group with retinopathy.‎ Conclusion: Free radical formation along with antioxidant deficiency in diabetes ‎mellitus increases over time and may play an important role in the development of ‎diabetic retinopathy. SOD, GPx, and vit E are important components of cell defence ‎against oxidative stress. Their levels were significantly decreased in diabetics and more ‎so in diabetic retinopathy.‎
