Abstract

This study was performed retrospectively on patients referred to post surgical ICU at Mansoura Main University Hospital during the first six months of the year (2000). The data were collected from their available observation sheets and from their admission sheets. And were studied for the following :-
preoperative diagnosis,Comorbidity, demographic data of these patients. And
the performed surgical interferance. Also length of stay in post surgical ICU and Investigations done during this stay, Vital signs on admission and discharge from ICU, and type of needed support, scoring and filling system in our post surgical ICU.
The results of this study showed that:-
there is 78 cases were recorded in the ICU’s files, 28 cases had observation sheets and admission sheets, 25 cases had observation sheets only, two cases with admission sheet only, lastly 23 cases were found to be recorded in ICU files with no observation or admission sheets.
It was found that most of cases referred to post surgical ICU during period of study was neurosurgical cases (68% of the total number of GI and GII n=53), then gynecological and obestatric cases 17% , ENT cases 9%, lastly general surgical cases 6% of total number of GI and GII (n=53).
As regard the outcome of cases referred to PSICU, mortality was recorded in 29 % of GI (n=28) and 28% of GII (n=25). Then, morbidity during ICU stay was recorded in 43% of GI (n=28) and 52% of GII (n=25) and it varied from fever, chest infection, haematemsis, bed sores to urinary tract infection.
The study also showed that post surgical ICU of Mansoura Main University Hospital still has many defective aspects including:-
post surgical ICU of Mansoura Main University Hospital has many defective aspects including lack of multi disciplinery and multi professional team, defective reporting and scoring of patients, high risk of nosocomical infection, small sized ICU with overcrowded bedside space leading to difficult movement during critical situation . Lastly, defective filling or archiving system.
