Abstract

The present work was conducted to study the effect of oral administration of doxazosin and the possible effect of oral administration of alfuzosin on the albino rat serum glucose, triglycerides, total¬cholesterol, HDL-cholesterol and LDL-cholesterol both during and after the induction of hyperlipidemia. Also, the effect of both drugs on heart rate and phenylephrine induced rise in blood pressure in anaesthetized mongrel dogs was recorded via ECG and kymograph. Rats were rendered hyperlipidemic by feeding on especial experimental diet enriched in cholesterol and sucrose and contain thiouraciL Doxazosin and alfuzosin administered during and after the induction of hyperlipidemia in albino rats produced significant decrease in serum concentration of total-cholesterol, triglycerides, and LDL¬cholesteroL While, both drugs produced significant increase in HDL¬cholesterol level and insignificantly changed serum glucose. By comparing the effect of doxazosin and alfuzosin on lipid profile, it was observed that no significant difference between the effect of both drugs on plasma cholesterol, triglycerides and LDL level. However the increase in HDL level induced by alfuzosin is higher than that induced by doxazosin. Similar to doxazosin, alfuzosin did not significantly affect plasma level of glucose.
