Abstract

Acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) is a primary disorder of the bone marrow in which the normal marrow elements are replaced by immature or undifferentiated blast cells. Neopterin is an intermediate in the pathway of pteridines released in vitro from non proliferating activated cells such as macrophages stimulated with interferon indicating a state of activated cell-mediated immunity. Considering ALL as the most important hematological neoplasm in children, no currently available in vitro trials have been studied on the . behaviour of neopterin in the serum in such a disease. So this triggered us to study the behaviour of neopterin in the serum of children with ALL. The present study included 21 children with recently diagnosed ALL (5 cases had ALL Ll and 16 cases had ALL L2). Their age ranged from 16 to 120 months .They were 13 females and 8 males. Ten healthy children of matched age and sex were taken as a control group. They were subjected to thorough history taking, clinical examination and laboratory investigation including complete blood count (CBC) and bone marrow aspiration (BMA) and estimation of the serum neopterin level. 14 patients are’ re-examined and their serum neopterin level is re¬estimated after remission.
