Abstract HUMORAL SPEC1FIC ANTI-SCHISTOSOMAL IMMUNE RESPONSE IN INFANTS AND NEWBORNS OF SCHISTOSOMA MANSONI INFECTED MOTHERS. In this study, IgA, IgM, and IgE as well as IgG against different Schistosoma mansoni antigens were determined in cord blood of newborns of Schistosoma mansoni infected mothers. In mothers concentration most of of of newborns the immunoglobulin isotypes, against Schistosoma mansoni antigen, was significantly lower than that in sera of infants mothers. In the group of infants older than two months, the frequency of IgA and IgM against most of the antigens was significantly higher than that in the group of newborns. Also, the concentration of IgA and IgM against all the antigens showed a highly significant increase in the group of infants, while the IgG antibodies were significantly higher in the group of newborns. Concentration of IgA and IgM against all the , antigens showed a highly significant positive correlation with the age of infants, while that of IgG showed a highly lignifioant neqat-tv. corrfllation with inf4nt age. From thflse results, we conclude that the humoral immune response against schistosomiasis start prenatal’, as IgM, IgA, and IgE do not cross the placenta. This immune response is triggered by antigens crossing the placenta. Also, there is augmentation of this response in infancy either due to antigens present in mothers’ milk or as anamnestic reaction due to stimulation of the immune system by other antigens. |
