Abstract

Seventy six patients with 86 metacarpal and phalangeal fractures have been operated upon at Dammam Central Hospital and Dr. Mohamed Fakhry Hospital,Eastern Province, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, during the period from April 1985 to November 1986. All the fractures have been fixed by AO mini plates and or mini screws. The principels of AO-ASIF for open reduction and rigid internal fixation have been applied in every case. The aims of this study are;- 1. To evaluate the results of this method in the treatment of hand fractures. 2. To analyze the different factors that may have an effect on the end results. 3. To find out the proper indication for this method in the management of different types of hand fractures in our patients. The criteria for selection of the study group were:- 1. Unstable and displaced closed fractures. 2. Intra articular fractures. 3. Open fractures with displacement and associated soft tisSue injuries. 4. Fractures that could not be maintained ~ closed reduction. 5. Multiple fractures of the metacarpals and phalanges. Forty eight patients could be followed up both clinicallY and radiolOgicallY for a period ranged from 3 monthS to 18 months with an average period of follOW up (4.57 months). There were 46 males (95.83%) and 2 females (4.17%) The youngest patient was 13 years old and the oldest was 55 years with an average age (29.6 years). There were 37 patients using their hands for gripping and 11 patients using their hands for pinching or hooking.
