Abstract

Viral hepatitis is increasing in last years among general population. the incidence of portal hypertension due to cirrhosis is compounded by high number of cases of schistosomaisis which is endemic in E!:,’YPt. Hepatitis B virus plays an important role in the development of chronic liver disease which consequantly leeds to development of portal hypertension and oesophageal varices. Endscopic variceal sc1erotherpay is the best method to treat variceal heamorrhage and prevent recurrent bleeding . The aim of the present study is to evaluate HBsAg positive patients with bleeding oesophageal varices after sclerotherapy in comparison with HBsAg negative patients. This study comprised 60 patients with bleeding oesophageal varices who were admitted to medical department, Mansoura University Hospital. They were devided equally into 2 groups, Group I :- HBsAg positive patients with bleeding oesophageal varices (1 female and 29 males with age ranging between 25 to 70 years). Group II :- HBsAg negative patients with bleeding oesophageal varices (2 females and 28 males with age ranging between 30 to 67 years) . History taking and clinical examination were done to all patients of both !:,’TOUpS, in addation to investigation which included serum bilirubin, albumin, SGPt, prothrombin time, activity, fNR and serum creatinine.
