Abstract

Beta-adrenergic blocking agent have received major attention in the last decade because of their utility in the management of cardiovascular disorders, including hypertension, angina pectoris, and cardiac arrhythmias. They are also used widely for a variety of other clinical conditions in man. The availability of about 10 different betaadrenoceptor blockers testifies to the success of these agents in modern therapeutics although they may have a deleterious effect on respiratory function owing to blockade of the Badrenoceptors in the lung, which are responsible for bronchomotor tone. The aim of the present study is to establish the eff¬ect of short term intravenous and long term oral administ¬ration of Bblockers selective and non-selective on respiratory function tests in normal subjects and groupS of patients with hypertension, ischaemic heart disease and migrainous headache to assess the potential benifits of selective and non-selective beta-blockers. The material of this research consisted of 83 subjectS. They were 32 normal subjects as a control group.
