Abstract The aim of this study was planned to establish an association between anticardiolipin antibodies and the development of pulmonary hypertension in two groups of patients havingcommon, causes of pulmonary hypertension l.e. bilharzial corpulmonale and rheumatic mitral valve disease. Also, antinuclear antibodies were detennined in order to find out if there is possibility of autoimmune mechanism underlying this association and its possible pathogenetic role. The study included 46patients and 10 healthy subjects as a control group. The age of the patients and control ranged form 25 to 55 years. The groups included 21 patients having bilharzial corpulmonale, 10 patients having pulmonary hypertension due to rheumatic heart disease and 15 patients having bilharzial hepatic fibrosis without corpulmonale. The patients and control were subjected to thorough history taking and clinical examination with stress on history of thromboembolic phenomena, history of bilharziasis and history of rheumatic fever. The following investigations were done: -E.C.G. Plain X-ray Chest. Echocardiography and doppler for diagnosis of pulmonary hypertension and mitral valve disease. |
