Abstract

This work is an attempt to contribute towards a better and clear understanding of the effect of snake venom (Cerastes cerastes) on the blood and different tissues of experimental animals. Assessment of the results occurring after the use of antivenom in the treatment of envenomation is done. Comparing it with the results of the use of other drugs with or instead of the antivenom. Reactions to the use of the snake venom and antivenom are common and remain of concern. An attempt to know the mechanism of anaphylactic reaction following snake bite and the use of antivenom is done . The study includes the following groups : To demonstrate the effect of single different doses (0.5, 1, ”1.5 and 2 ^g/gm. body weight) of Cerastes cerastes venom on total serum bilirubin, blood picture and different tissues (Kidneys, liver, heart, lungs, spleen and brain) of guinea pigs. Significant increase in the total serum bilirubin level was noticed which differ in intensity according to the dose given, while the total red cell count and haemoglobin level showed a significant decrease. The total white cell count together with the neutrophils and eosinophils revealed a significant increase, associated with a significant decrease in the lymphocytes. The different organs taken showed a marked histopathologica1
