Abstract

In this study we evaluate the effect of intrathecal fentanyl by using different doses on the onset and duration of hyperbaric bupivacaine-induced spinal sensory and motor block and the early post-operative analgesic requirement in 60 patient of either sex undergoing lower limb surgery.
The patient were allocated into 6 groups, 10 patients each, they received intrathecal bupivacaine with 0, 10, 20, 30, 40, 50 Jlg fentanyl respectively and the total volume injected not exceed 3 ml in all the cases.
After injection, blood pressure, pulse rate, oxygen saturation, time of onset of sensory and motor block, pain score and any side effects were recorded every 2 minutes for the first 20 minutes and then every 15 minutes untill the patient complain of pain, then the patients were admitted to the surgical leU for 24 hours post-operative.
