Abstract

The main complication of the management of pterygium is the
Recurrence. However, many modulations of adjunctive treatments with variable success rates have been developed but, no single treatment has been universally effective. Furthermore, many of these adjuncts are not without risks and it is not acceptable that the surgical excision of a generally benign path logy such as pterygium should cause serious complication so, it is important to choose the safe method not only the effective one. In the present study comparison between the results that were obtained by post-operative argon laser photocoagulation, beta irradiation and intra-operative MM•C was performed as regards their effect bn the recurrence and other complications they caused. The study was conducted on 90 eyes of 90 subjects. The selection of cases was done from patients attending the out-patients clinics of Mansoura Ophthalmic Center during the period from October 2002 to December 2003. They were categorized into 3 groups according to adjunctive technique used [30 subject = 30 eyes in each group], these groups were: , (1) group I: Included 30 patients treated with bare sclera and intraoperative topical application of MM-C solution In a concentration of 0.025% for one minute and 0.04% for 3 minutes.
