Abstract Periodontal disease is a chronic inflammtory disease which results in destruction of the supporting stryctures of the teeth. It is initiated by plaqe accumulation in the gingivo_dental area. Initially it is confined to the gingiva and is termed gingival disease. Later the supporting structures become involed and the diseaserecives the name of periodontal disease. The most common type of gingival disease is the simple inflammatory involvement caused by bacterial plaque attached to the tooth surface. Aother form of gingival disease is acute necrotizing ulcerative gingivitis which causes rapid destruction of tissues. |
