Abstract The Middle Pleistocene Prenile sediments consist of coarse sandy layers deposited by a vigorous precursor of the modern Nile. The deposited clayey and silty sediments covered the irregular surface of the Middle Pleistocene sands. The present day protrusions of the above mentioned irregularities in the surface of the Middle Pleistocene sands in the Nile Delta, constitute the sand island or (turtle backs). However, those high irregularities (mounds), that have been submerged with the Holocene clay and silt are named buried Gezira(island) sands. |
